There is only a week left until the new exciting Panasonic camera is going to be released to the public. It has already been priced and dated in Japan in November last year. As someone who is passionate about, you are probably interested in knowing how to include more depth of field in your photos. There is a lot of literature on this subject. If you're a professional photographer, you've probably learned some things about wide angle (shorter focal length) and telephoto lenses (long focal length). For years photography textbooks and magazines have been promoting the idea that a wide-angle lens provides more depth of field compared to a telephoto one. However, if you type 'depth of field' on Google, you will soon come across a lot of articles arguing this assumption.
Recent tests taken by experts, including several photo magazines, have proven that, technically speaking, a wide-angle length does not provide more depth of field. These tests are quite easy and you can conduct them yourself to verify the conclusions. But how does this impact your work as a photographer? All these tests assume that you keep the picture size constant. They go like this: take a photo of some subject using a telephoto and then zoom out and use the wide angle lens. You can also use interchangeable telephoto and wide angle lenses. Then take the photo made with the short focus lens and enlarge a selected portion of it until is the same size as the same portion in the other photo. You will see that there is no significant difference between them. This proves that wide angle lenses don't actually provide more depth of field.
Now, let's see why you actually zoom out. Say you are in front of an amazingly beautiful scenery, such as a mountain landscape beautifully colored with sunrise light. You zoom in and take the picture with a telephoto setting. Then you zoom out and take the photo using the wide angle setting. You expect to get more depth of field with the last photo and that's what it looks like. You would never think that if you enlarge a portion of it this apparent depth of field will disappear. When you use a wide angle setting, you zoom out because you want to capture more things in your picture. You are aware that the objects will look smaller and it doesn't bother you. In the same way, when you zoom in you want to focus on a certain aspect of the photo even though you know you will loose depth of field. Zooming in and out and using different focal length setting makes you perceive that the depth of field also varies. Photos taken with the wide angle appear to include more depth of field compared to those taken with the telephoto. This may not be true technically. But what is in fact a photograph? What appears to the viewer. If you don't place technical correctness above everything else, you should stick to what you've known and has proven right for years. As long as you like what you get, why drop it? Your photos will prove if you are on the right path or not.
Hybrid cameras, also called mirror less cameras, are a new breed of camera that combine the compactness of a compact digital camera with the picture quality of a digital single lens reflex camera. The new hybrid cameras don't have a single lens reflex mirror taking away some of the bulk of a DSLR, but have a larger image sensor than your standard compact digital for better photos. A hybrid camera also does not have a standard viewfinder as in a DSLR, but rather uses an LCD screen or an electronic viewfinder that can be purchased separately. The hybrid cameras have interchangeable lenses like a DSLR, making them versatile enough to get many types of shots. They also take incredible HD video in 780p or 1080p format.
Hybrid cameras are the answer to that middle market of customers who don't want to invest in high end DSLRs, but want to get higher quality pictures than a compact digital. The hybrids are compact enough to carry around very easily. On many models, you can instantly record HD video without going through a menu. Most models run in the 0 - ,000 range, making them very affordable to many.
Olympus and Panasonic use what's known as a micro four thirds format for interchangeable lenses. This is an attempt to come up with a standard format for digital camera lenses to make it possible to exchange with advanced DSLR lenses. Micro four thirds refer to the ratio of the image sensor, which is a 4 X 3. This size is smaller than a standard 35mm, but about 10 times larger than a standard digital compact. With all of the hype surrounding the new hybrid cameras, it remains to be seen if the market for this type of camera will take off. Sales have steadily increased since 2008 and it is predicted to take off by 2012.
Hybrids offer the best of both worlds. They are compact enough to carry around easily and powerful enough to take great photos with the right lens.
Hybrid Cameras ExplainedI'm not much given to laying down the law or to providing rules about photography or anything else but I'm going to tell you now that if you want to take super sharp photos you're going to have to do something about your choice of lenses.
I'm going to start with a piece of clear advice.
It's this: Lenses are more important than cameras. Yes, it's true, Lenses are more important than cameras. A camera is just a light tight box attached to a lens.
This means that if you want to take super sharp photos you must have lenses that you can rely on to make this happen.
Now, if you want to choose your lenses you're going to have to take certain factors into account.
Are you going to choose a lens which has a camera permanently attached to it? Are you going to choose a lens or lenses where you can attach different lenses to a camera? - these are interchangeable lenses. Are you going to choose lenses with a fixed focal length, sometimes called prime lenses? or are you going to choose zoom lenses?
Just in case you're not clear what these terms mean, a fixed focal length or prime lens has just one focal length: 28mm for a wide angle, 50mm for a standard, 100mm or more for a telephoto and so on.
A zoom lens of course is extremely convenient because it makes up a package which can include different focal lengths so you can buy a lens which can go, for example from 28mm to 200mm.
Now, before I go any further I'm going to tell you that it is possible to buy zoom lenses that can help you to take super sharp photos.
But and there is a but, it is likely that such lenses will be very expensive and rather heavy. There are some exceptions but you need to choose carefully. So, let's have a look at some of the things we'll have to think about.
First of all every lens has a maximum aperture.
So called wide aperture lenses have a lot of glass and a maximum aperture of somewhere around f2. There are several reasons for preferring lenses with a wide aperture:
They allow more light in - this means that you can take sharp pictures when the lighting levels are low.
It's much easier to focus with a wide aperture lens.
Auto focus systems work better and if you focus manually you can see more clearly.
Wide aperture lenses give you much more control over depth of field (DOF).
DOF is very shallow at wide apertures and this can be vital for some pictures - portraits for example where you want the background out of focus.
So, is it better to choose prime lenses or zoom lenses? Let's have a look at zoom lenses first. Zoom lenses are very convenient. And they have some clear advantages. From my point of view the main advantages are:
You don't have to change your lens so often.
This means that when the elephant charges towards you, you won't have to fumble around choosing a different lens and you'll get less dust on your sensor if you don't change your lenses much.
The other advantage is that you can frame your picture in many different ways from the same spot.
This can be a big help sometimes but I have a special accessory - it's called a leg. Often the best approach to changing your composition is to walk. And there's a problem: The more convenient and flexible a zoom lens is, the harder it is to get a good quality, wide aperture lens which you can afford and carry.
Many popular zoom lenses marketed as super zooms and most of the kit lenses supplied with many cameras are perfectly suitable for casual use but they are not going to give you super sharp pictures.
I'm saddened when people have spent a lot of money on buying a capable camera and then use a less than top quality lens.
So, if you want to buy a zoom lens and you want to take super sharp photos, look for a zoom lens with a constant wide aperture and a moderate zoom range. Like many photographers I use a zoom for my walkabout lens - a lens I can take with me to the mountains and fields, a casual stroll and use for many types of photos. I usually use my full frame Canon 5D Mark 11 and for this I have a Tamron 28-75mm SP zoom lens. This is a fine lens - especially when price is a consideration. However, if you're interested in super sharp photos, it's worth having a look at prime lenses.
Prime lenses have a lot going for them:
They're easier to design and simpler to manufacture than zoom lenses.
Wide apertures come as standard.
They are less likely to show distortion.
Now you can pay the proverbial arm and a leg for wide aperture prime lenses as well as zoom lenses, so where are the bargains? First of all, every camera maker has a standard lens - that is a lens of around 50mm focal length. These have been around for a long time and the quality is good.
One example in the Canon range is the Canon 50 mm f1.8 often mentioned as the best bang for your buck - but there's a downside. The construction is, well a kind word is cheap - it's plastic almost everywhere. The focussing is pretty old style and the manual focussing ring is skimpy.
But the glass is top notch and this lens with its wide aperture is well up to the standard of my full frame DSLR and is a great portrait lens with a crop sensor camera. And it's very light so you can carry it all day long and if an accident should happen you can replace it for about 0.00.
Using a standard lens makes you take a disciplined approach and you can use it in many different situations - especially if you're willing to use your legs.
Another way to be sure of getting super sharp optics is to choose a macro lens.
Macro lenses are specially corrected to take 1:1 size pictures of objects such as coins or insects. But they make super sharp general purpose lenses. I used the Tamron 90mm in my film days and now use the Canon f2.8 100mm Macro lens. Macro lenses are not the cheapest but they do provide great value for money and extra versatility. A word of warning: check that the lens really is a macro lens. Some companies use the word macro loosely to mean half size or even just fairly close focussing.
So let's just say it again, lenses are more important than cameras. and if you want super sharp pictures choose a fixed focal length prime lens or a zoom lens with a moderate zoom range, a constant wide aperture and good glass.
Just to clear up one point - what happens if you want to buy a lens with the camera attached?
My personal opinion is that the marketing gurus tend to emphasize the cameras rather than the lenses. Also, modern digital cameras are made by traditional camera makers like Canon and Nikon and the new kids on the block like Sony and Panasonic who have great expertise in electronics. Some manufacturers like Sigma and Fuji produce cameras with special wide aperture high quality wide angle prime lenses. There's one other point, some of the new companies have teamed up with famous lens makers: Sony with Zeiss, Panasonic with Leica and I've seen HP cameras sporting Pentax lenses. This can be a help as these famous lens makers won't put their name to poor lenses.
Also, read the reviews and forget the bits about the megapixels and zoom range and concentrate on the comments on lens quality. I like to check dpreviews and the pages from photographer Bob Atkins to get some good advice on lens quality.
Just to finish my advice at this point: Once you have chosen a super sharp lens, it's vital to know how to use it.

Make Your Photos Super Sharp Part 4 - Choosing LensesWhen you're getting started the challenge is overcoming the fear of taking pictures of strangers. Since telephoto lenses are not normally used in street photography, how can you stand a few feet from your subject, put the camera to your eye, focus, and click the shutter without getting nervous? A good street photographer is not only fearful in the beginning (this is a good sign of being sensitive) but they also don't want to do anything which will change the how the subject is behaving.
With practice, you can overcome your reluctance to photograph strangers as well as learn techniques which will help you get better candid shots. One word of caution - it can be addictive. After a while the street photographer will choose which seat has the best view in a restaurant, or which side of the street offers the best possibilities.

If you are still using a point and shoot film or digital camera, your choice of lens speed is limited to the camera. First of all, the speed of the lens is determined by the size of the opening, known as the aperture. The larger the opening the faster the lens is considered to be. Typically, lenses marked with F4, F3.5, F2.8, and smaller are considered fast, while lenses marked with a bigger number are slower. I know this may sound odd, but the smaller the number the faster the lens. If you are new to shooting with an SLR camera, you are most likely looking at “zoom” lenses. Most zooms today have a variable aperture. This simply means that at the shortest end, the lens is faster than at the long end. For example, a typical lens a 28-80mm. This lens zooms from 28mm to 80mm, and it is a very good starter lens. This type of a lens will typically have a F3.5 aperture at 28mm (short end), while at 80mm (long end) it will be F4.5, or F5.6, which is considerably slower than the short end. Typically, the faster the lens, the more it will cost, and the heavier it will be. Most casual shooters look for very versatile lenses, and faster lenses certainly offer more flexibility in certain situations.
Now that we briefly discussed the concept of speed, lets figure out whether you really need a fast lens. The first thing that you have to think about is your shooting habits. Everyone is different, and very much unique. Some shoot landscapes, some only people, others night scenes, some shoot under water, and so forth. Typical casual shooter will likely shoot during daytime, and will likely be shooting portraits, landscapes, city scenes (during a vacation perhaps), and other fairly undemanding environments. If you shoot a lot of photos in dim light, like night clubs, restaurants, museums, outdoors after dark, and other dim light situations, a faster lens is definitely a boon. However, you should always keep in mind that most zoom lenses, while faster at the short end, will be slower at the long end. This is very important, because if are going to be shooting at the longer end of the lens, when shopping for a lens, keep this in mind, and you will save yourself some money. Let me explain. Take two lenses, one is a 28-80mm f2.8(short end) / f5.6(long end), and another lens, 28-80mm f3.5 / f 5.6. These two have an identical range, however the first is faster at the short end. This larger aperture does not come free. You may end up paying 2 times as much as the second lens. If you are going to be mostly zooming to the long end of the range, compare and price your lens at that end.
